72-hour Kit in a Small Bucket

This is how it all fits.
We just wanted to share some different ideas about 72-hour kits.
You never know when you might need one.
Where we live people have been recently evacuated from their home for 2 days due to fires.
It never hurts to be prepared!
I realize this is NOT enough water.  We have water storage to grab with this.

We have tried these a couple of different ways.
Right now we like the buckets.
They are easy to carry, they could haul water and they are a place to sit.
The contents:
2 bottles of water
Can of soup ~ save the can for warm oatmeal & cocoa
Can of beans
Can of Spam
Can opener
Can of Vienna sausages
Can of Sterno heat for cooking
Cup O Soup ~ save the cup to drink the cocoa
Playing cards to pass the time
Note book and pencil
Toilet paper
Plastic spoon
Knife
Emergency blanket
Hot hands
Wet ones
Purell
Medicine
Glow sticks
First aid kit with super glue ~ Super glue closes cuts and it sterilizes
Bandanna
Trash bag ~ could be a poncho, small shelter or a dew trap to catch water
Flint and steel
Matches
Lighter
Pitchwood and Popsicle sticks ~ both make good fire starter
The medicine bottle has cotton balls in it that have been covered with Vaseline.  This is a good fire starter too.
To make these, put them in a large ziploc bag and work the Vaseline in the cotton balls to cover well.

Just a note a small ziploc baggie full of dryer lint is great to catch a spark from your flint and steel.
Here are a few more ideas:

Fire Starters ~ source American Hunter, July 2012

Pitchwood:  When sap floods into a tree wounds the wood becomes heavy and brittle as pitchwood is formed.  A few slivers of pitchwood stuck into a tinder bundle almost guarantees success

Bird's Nest:  If you can find one, these are ready-made tinder bundles.

Dry Grasses:  You can make your own tinder nest by twisting dry grass stalks together into a tight bundle.

Shredded Tree Bark:  Some trees, such as juniper and cedar, have an inner-bark layer that can be shredded and also twisted into a tight tinder bundle.

Hope these idea's help you with your 72~hour kits.

    1. I don't think 2 bottles of water near adequate for 3 days.

  2. I REALLY love the idea of using a bucket! I may end up making a bucket like yours when I get my own home when I'm married. I really love prepping & survivalist things and write about things related to that on most Mondays!
