Myrna's Bread

Bread

8 cups steaming hot water                         Flour As Needed ~ After other ingredients are mixed
3 cups powdered milk
1 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon Salt
3/4 cup shortening
Place these five ingredients in your mixer ~

1 cup luke warm water
Add 2 Tablespoons yeast in water and stir slightly, let it get frothy and bubbly.
Then add to above mixture, (when mixture has cooled to luke warm).  Do not add it to the mixture before it has cooled or it will scald your yeast and the bread will not rise.

Mix all ingredients together.  Then slowly add flour until the dough starts to pull away from the mixers bowl.  If you have a Bosch mixer, let the mixer mix the dough for 6 minutes.  If not, you are still able to make great bread.  Just mix it really good by hand.

Then remove dough from the mixer and place in a air-tight bowl and let rise until double.  Punch the dough down and get all the air out, then let it raise again.  Then divide in eight even portions.  Place in pans, let rise until double and then bake in a 350 degree oven until golden brown.

*Note ~ I like to bake this recipe 4 loaves at a time.  So I form the first four loaves and pan them.  Then I wait until the loaves are almost ready for the oven and form the last four loaves.  The bread cooks more evenly this way.

Nothing smells like love as much as hot home-made bread!!
Enjoy!

    1. I do freeze the extra bread. It is a good idea to double bag them. My family loves homemade bread and toast. So it is nice to always have some on hand!

    1. I was blessed with a hubby and boys that have good appetites. They love homemade bread! My little girl wouldn't eat bread unless I made it when she was little, as a result I needed to make alot of bread!
I pop it in the freezer so it stays nice and fresh. It is a good idea to double bag it.
      I hope you enjoy it!

    1. It does slice well. It holds together well even to toast. I do always double bag it so it stays fresher while in the freezer. I hope you enjoy it!

  8. This recipe intrigues me. I am not a great bread maker, but this recipe sounds so much easier and less time consuming than others I have tried. I just have to try it. Thank you so much for sharing it with us on The Country Homemaker Hop!

  11. Just arrived at this site from Sew you can do it Friday and was lured in by the scrumptious photo. After reading multiple times, I cannot find an amount for flour? As needed is not a term for a neophyte bread maker ... How much flour? Will this work also for gluten free flour?

    1. Sorry gigi; Due to serious illness our blog has been neglected! I can't give you an exact measurement of flour. It varies so much! You want to add it until your dough is not a sticky blob. It kind of stays together and looks like a nice large loaf of bread. Stop adding flour once you reach that stage because if you add too much flour it will be hard bread. (We want it soft!) I have no experience with fluten free anything,Sorry!

  12. Sorry Amy; Due to serious illness our blog got neglected...Your bowl does need a lid so it doesn't dry out. Be careful not to add too much flour, that will cause your bread to be hard. I can't give you an exact measurement because it varies from area to area. I add flour until it isn't a sticky mess in the bowl. It kind of stays in one large all of dough! Don't be afraid of the yeast. All you have to be careful is not to add the yeast into too hot of mixture because then it will not work. Put your yeast in a bowl with warm water and it will grow. Then you know it will work. Then wait to add it to the milk mixture until it is luke warm too. Good luck, I hope this helps! Sorry to leave you wondering.
